The Savoir - Faire
This is a slow silk, made in a slow way. It is born by hand, in the old traditional manner: steeped in the amber juice of the wild yam root, buried in the cool river mud of the Pearl River Delta, then carried back to the sun to dry, over and over, through dozens of patient steps. This is knowledge passed from hand to hand across generations, and it lives only here, in Shunde, where the climate itself is part of the recipe. No two lengths are ever the same. Each one is a single afternoon of light.
A silk this rare deserves to be treated as such. Every YÀNZǏ piece is made to order, hand crafted only when it is chosen, so that nothing precious is wasted and nothing sits unworn. What remains of each length finds its way into something smaller and just as considered. We would rather make less, and make it well: this is Chinese cultural heritage craftsmanship, followed all the way through — from the first fold of mud to the piece that becomes yours.
The Root
It begins with the wild yam root Shuliang, crushed for its deep red tannin. The raw silk is steeped in it and dried in the sun, again and again, until the cloth deepens to warm amber.
The Mud
At dawn, the amber silk is coated in the iron-rich mud of the Pearl River delta. Where mud meets tannin, a reaction turns one face a deep, lacquered black. The other is left the colour of tea. No dye, no pigment — only earth.
The Sun
The silk is washed clean in the river and laid on open grass to cure under sunlight alone. Only in the warm months, only by hand, and no two lengths ever come out the same.
Each of our fabric takes a season to make, every piece is created for a purpose — the large and the small born of the same silk, the same hands, the same sun. YÀNZǏ is made slowly, wholly, nothing is hurried, nothing is wasted, meant to be kept for a lifetime.
